Bagawat Necropolis: “A Journey into Early Christian Egypt”

Időpont: 2026. május 05. 16.00
Helyszín: Múzeum krt. 4, F/212

This lecture presents an overview of the ancient Christian necropolis of Bagawat, located in Al-Kharga Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert. Bagawat is one of the earliest and best-preserved Christian burial sites in the world, featuring a unique collection of mudbrick chapels dating from the 3rd to the 7th century CE.
The lecture draws on a series of previous scholarly research conducted by the presenter on Bagawat and addresses key themes including the development of early Christian communities in Egypt, funerary architecture, symbolic wall paintings, and the interaction between Egyptian, Roman, and Christian traditions. It also highlights selected chapels such as the Chapel of Peace and the Chapel of Exodus, discussing their iconography and inscriptions. By examining these elements, the presentation aims to provide a deeper understanding of how Bagawat reflects religious, cultural, and social transformations in Late Antique Egypt.
