What is Classical Philology?
The term classical (Latin: classica) refers to the study of the ancient world traditionally considered “classical,” namely the cultures of Greece and Rome. Philology (Latin: philologia) primarily means the study and interpretation of written sources and literary texts. However, this term alone does not fully capture the breadth of knowledge gained in classical philology departments.
Around the world, classical philologists engage not only in interpreting ancient texts but also explore nearly every aspect of Greco-Roman culture, including art history, philosophy, linguistics, history, and religious studies. Therefore, the focus of this field is not a specific cultural segment but rather the historical period of antiquity itself.
