Bachelor's program

The aim of the Classical Philology undergraduate program is twofold. On the one hand — true to its name — it provides a linguistic foundation. Those who choose this branch of science must become familiar with the basics of Latin and Ancient Greek, and must acquire a certain proficiency in reading ancient texts in these languages. Consequently, the core of the program consists of language classes and text readings. However, it is not strictly necessary to reach the same level in both languages: one may be emphasized over the other, or a balance can be maintained between the two. This decision is left to the student, based on their interests. On the other hand, an important goal of the program is also to introduce students to the major fields of ancient studies, in which ancient texts are important sources, though not the direct objects of study. Our students can attend lectures on ancient religion, art, and, of course, history. The program also employs diverse teaching methods: in addition to the usual seminars and lectures, the so-called year-end papers are prepared within a personal tutorial system, during which students receive individualized guidance and professional supervision from their advisor.
