Department of Latin
Department of Latin

The primary task of the Department of Latin is the cultivation and promotion of the Latin language and Roman culture. Accordingly, the department’s profile mainly includes language classes as well as courses presenting and interpreting Roman culture, covering literature, religion, everyday life, and its diverse customs. The focus of teaching is on understanding the ancient world, but both in education and research, the later history of Latin-language culture is also present. In Hungary, the active and even official use of the Latin language lasted until nearly the mid-19th century. The education and research at the department familiarize students with this exceptionally long and rich tradition. Classical philology training is conducted in cooperation with the Departments of Latin and Greek, across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs.
