Department of Greek
Department of Greek

Our department is the only institution in the country where both ancient and modern Greek studies can be pursued. The teaching of Ancient Greek began in the first years after the university’s founding. The first independent Department of Greek was established by Iván Télfy in 1852, while the Modern Greek program started in 1975. The main research areas of the current department include philology, textual criticism and editing, oratory and rhetoric, the 15th-century reception of ancient literature, the history of the Medieval Greek language, the history of the Greek community in Hungary, and the history of modern Greek identity.
